Who can be called a terrorist?
The recent terror attacks (no need to specify the place as they have now become ubiquitous) left me not just depressed but contemplating too. People, including the most educated and modern ones, have been seen cribbing and calling Islam synonymous with terrorism. Even the most innocent Muslim citizens are perceived as a potential threat by their own friends and that is the most unfortunate part.
Who can be called a terrorist?
Is terrorism really synonymous with Islam? Answer is a big NO. Are LTTE Tigers of Sri Lanka Muslims? Or are they not terrorists? They killed a promising leader Rajeev Gandhi in a suicide bombing attack. Is the man Dara Singh, responsible for burning alive an Australian social worker and his innocent children in Orissa a Muslim? No again. Latest is the confession of a naxal cadre, that too on TV, for killing of Swami Laxmananand, because of which the Kandhmal riots started. Are people spreading terror across Nepal Muslims? No again. Are the barbaric Maoists terror gangs Muslims? No again too. There is no dearth of examples of non-Muslim terrorists; only that they don’t occupy a centre stage in news. And some people seem to have a selective amnesia for them!
Who can be called a terrorist?
Recently, I happened to see a live debate on this topic on NDTV profit, at the end of which a lady posed a simple question, which left me thinking:

‘If we all convert to Islam will terrorism stop? ’
Any answers?

If all convert to terrorism; will terrorism stop? Answer is a big NO. Because Islam teaches violence and hatred.

LTTE killed Rajiv Gandhi. Indira gandhi was killed by her own Sikh body guard. A swami was killed in orissa by a Maoist. Naxalites kill government officials. There are caste wars amongst Hindus. There is Shia-Sunni riot every now and then. Should all these violent actions be compared with violence by Muslims? Absolutely not. Because Muslim terrorist are anti national and they wish to spread Islam through terror.

Hi Mr Ramesh,

Thanks for commenting. I think you meant to say ”If all convert to Islam”, not terrorism; it seems to be a typo only.

Hypothetically, if the terrorism would not stop even if all were Muslims, then it means terrorism is not for spreading Islam, a contradiction to your last line. Resorting to terrorism anywhere by anybody, for whatever reason and at whatever scale is condemnable. And Islam, or for that matter no religion teaches violence and hatred. If some people misuse any religion to the wrong ends, the genuine followers should not be included with them.

The answer to your question is a resounding NO. Islam’s history among its own people is not any too good, either. Apparently, it depends on which kind of Muslim you are. Sunni and Shi’a have been at war off and on almost since Mohammed died. Egypt fought a war against Libya in the 1970s, Iran and Iraq were at war in the 80s, the Taliban made war on Afghani Muslims and so does the Saudi ”Modesty Police”.

Perhaps not all Muslims are terrorists, but the great majority of terrorists ARE Muslims. Bringing the ”dream of the Capliphate” into reality will not stop the terror, only redirect it, since anyone not ”Muslim enough” for one terror group or another will also suffer terrorism.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for reading and commenting. You are very right. The answer has to be a NO, may be with a slightly differing reason. The terrorism would not stop since there are many who are resorting to it for varied causes and in different measures. But whomsoever spreads terror should be condemned, not selectively. And genuine followers of any faith should not be the targets of wrath.

Converting to Islam will not stop terrorism. And I want to believe that terrorism has nothing to do with religion. But there are a couple of questions that leave me wondering:

Why is it that even after a series of acknowledged terror attacks by Islamic terror groups over a long period of time, the so called ’intelligentsia’ prefers to turn a blind eye to it? Instead, it harps on banning a particular Hindu outfit!

If we add up all the non-Islamic terror groups, will it even remotely equate with the number of Islamic terror groups?

Ms Mita,

Thanks for reading and commenting. Terrorists are killers first and anything else later. They certainly have no religion worth calling so. Silence of intelligentia is really disheartening but that is not confined to any paticular religion. However, lately there seems to be an awakening too. But barbarism in a civilised society, in whatever form for whatever reason need to be condemned.

I am wondering what is the intention of the writer? Is he trying to justify Islamic terrorism only because there are several other terrorist outfits operating in various forms? Does the existence of various other terrorist organizations provide some sort of legitimacy to the killings by the Islamic terrorists? The writer was certainly out of his mind while penning this bogus piece. He fails to grasp this fact that terrorists are after all terrorists and any attempt to justify their killings cannot be tolerated. The author has cited killings by LTTE and Naxalites forgetting the important difference that these are confined to a particular region, being the by-product social and economic oppression. On the other hand, the Islamic terrorism is the by-product of hatred for other communities across the globe? May I ask the author about the agenda of Islamic terrorists?

He seems to have turned a blind eye to the fact that Islamic bomb has become a threat for the whole world. It’s time to defuse the Islamic bomb. How can you ignore the fact that Islamic terrorism has virtually spread in all the parts of world ?

what you state and propose here is rather sad...infact denigrating to some extent!

conversion to Islam, aversion to Islam, hatred towards Islam, or blind faith on Islam...neither stated above is in any way instrumental in inciting terrorism!

what is happening today in the world is VERY VERY UNFORTUNATE...

this is why even a happy go lucky youth like me is also contemplating on where exactly things are heading towards.

You see my friend there is an ongoing propaganda against Islam...and some people have been really successful in spreading the poisonous dictums against the religion

this my friend is VERBAL TERRORISM against a faith which has been mis-interpreted by evil influences.

The saddest part is that whatever falsities ’some’ are spreading is being attended to by keen ears!

but the loss will not be of the religion which i most honourably belong to... but rather the loss is of a people who are content of being misguided or beguilled!

the choice is yours...
whether you rather be led along like a herd of blind cattle...

or

would one chose to find it’s own way...

as far as Islam is concerned we DO NOT NEED ANY ONE TO PROTECT OR DEFEND OR GUARD IT!

HUMAN ENTERPRISE IS NO MATCH TO THE DIVINE PLANS!

ISLAM WILL PROTECT ITSELF!

the fact to consider is that whether we will be able to protect ourselves from the wrath of the benevolent!

Ms Shahwar K,

Thanks for commenting. I think you got my point wrong. Please note that I have myself written that Islam is NOT synonymous with terrorism, as thought by many, and have stressed that others resorting to massacres should also be considered terrorists.

@Wordspark,

I am sorry if my comments mistakenly blame you!

That is not my intention!

”YOU”,has been addressed to all those people, who in utter ignorance and irrationalty, ARE maligning a religion which they DO NOT UNDERSTAND, NEITHER DO THEY WISH TO, NOR ARE THEY REQUIRED TO!

If one respects one’s own religion, then one would not have the audacity to malign another faith, which quite a few fellow bloggers are resorting to on this forum!

THIS IS VERY UNFORTUNATE!

SHEER IGNORANCE!

”If we all convert to Islam will terrorism stop? ’
Any answers?”

I GUESS THE ABOVE IS NOT NEEDED!

Islam does not require appeasement, which i can perceive in the above statement although that might not have been meant by you!

And WORDSPARK, I APPOLOGISE IF MY COMMENTS HAVE HURT YOU, WHICH WAS PURELY UNINTENTIONAL!

WITH RESPECT...

I don’t think that any religion in this world teaches hatred towards other human beings or justify their killings, it is the few weak people who get influenced by strong who are wrongly inclined and turn into fanatics destroying the bond which binds all human beings together conversion or no conversion will not change anything

Thank You Ms Shahwar for the reply. Anybody resorting to terror methods (killing, torture, arson etc) should be called a terrorist, irrrespective of his religion, scale and area of operation or the cause he claims to espouse.
The question asked by someone on NDTV was towards the people who insinuate Muslims in general for every terrorist activity, which serves only to spread hatred. My own answer to it would also be a ’NO’ for the reasons I have already amply stated in the article itself.

No type of hypothetical World conversion could stop ANYTHING..terrorism, death, racism, nothing..The moment there is immense unity, corruption and faulty translations to profit and control begin. There will never be euphoria, the goody bag is just too good, too powerful for someone not to want to control it, distort it, and capitilize it..

Hi Oscar,

Thank you for reading and commnenting.

I feel you are right. The vices are independent of any religion and hypothetically if all world adopts one religion than vices will start breeding within it, because of inherent nature of human.
