I still do not fully understand the logic behind launching Tata Nano, the much touted Rs. 1 lakh car. The entire set of strategies is steered towards Tata’s own benefits and profits to the company. Mr. Tata should also show some concern towards the consumption of petroleum that is already burning a hole in the Indian economy, for our roads that are lightyears away from the state of readiness for welcoming millions of Nanos, and also for the severe scarcity of parking spaces. Launch of Nano has triggered a race in the Indian car market for mini cars. Are more cars the only sign of development? Mr. Tata may have designed an excellent online sales strategy but the arrival of Nanos and such similar vehicles will only aggravate the already existing problems. Also, most importantly these flashy cars are being made on the land forcefully snapped from the poor farmers, the 600 acres of agricultural land that once belonged to the farmers of Singur (WB), who have now been compensated with money. But is forcefully snatching their land for a private car maker and then providing monetary compensation justified? I think not. I feel it’s unethical and wrong. Rather, why doesn’t Mr. Tata try to put all the marketing brain behind something that is much more environment friendly and useful to a common man?

While i agree with some of the problems you have identified;i do think that Tata have come up with a wonderful gift for the less well off in India. How I wish someone was making such a car in Pakistan-better still making the one which runs on compressed air in a similar price range.
This will truly make available convenience, comfort and pride which comes from owning a brand new car to ownership for millions of Indians who otherwise would never have been able to afford a car.
Exactly what India needs at the moment.More empowerment of the neglected majority.
In India there is already a huge scarcity of parking spaces and every other day there are fights even murders over the parking issue. coupled with the por roads and high petrol prices, nano, i feel will only add to the clutter.
Also the plant is made on the land forcefully snapped from the farmers.

Yup, Nano is a small car, as the name suggests. Indian roads are already so congested and brawls over parking spaces are just too common.
secondly, nano is not (i feel) fully suitable for a big family (5+ members) and long journeys.

But I think Tata is well within its rights to try and reach out to the mobike crowd and offer them an affordable car.
After all, all those other companies manufacturing coupes too need to fulfill their environmental duties.
the only strategy behind the Nano launch that i did not get was Tata’s refusal to allow the car to be sold as taxis.
That would have helped their business immensely and made much more sense for the environment because honestly half those ambassadors out there are just no good!!
